Dentures – Removable Prostheses
Removable dentures are artificial replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are not as comfortable as having your natural teeth, however can help to restore your ability to chew and improve your overall appearance. Our practice can provide a metal partial denture service, otherwise we work with local clinical dental technicians for other denture fabrication needs.
Here’s a summary of the different types:
Full Dentures
- Complete replacement for all teeth in the upper or lower jaw
- Made of an acrylic plastic base with artificial teeth
- Held in place by careful design, suction +/- denture adhesive
Immediate Dentures
- Temporary dentures placed immediately after tooth extractions
- Allow you to have teeth while your mouth heals
- Require relining after approximately three months or replacement as your jaw bone remodels and changes shape
Partial Dentures (Acrylic)
- Replace one or more missing teeth
- Plastic base with artificial teeth attached
- Clasps secure them to remaining natural teeth
Partial Dentures (Metal)
- Similar to acrylic partials but with a thinner metal framework
- More durable, stable and comfortable than acrylic partial dentures
- Clasps or precision attachments secure them to remaining natural teeth
Proper care and maintenance can help to extend the life of your dentures. Regular dental check-ups for people with partial dentures are recommended to ensure optimum oral health of the key remaining teeth.
